He is someone who has gradually risen from stage to television to films and in every sector he is involved, he has gracefully increased his admirers all over the world- the actor we are referring to here is a British-American actor Andrew Garfield.

Andrew Russell Garfield was born on 20 August 1983 in Los Angeles, California, as the second child to a British nursing school assistant mother Lynn and an American swimming coach father Richard Garfield. He along with his parents moved to Epsom, England when he was three years old. Garfield’s first choice was to become a businessman and had attended Priory Preparatory School and City of London Freemen’s School but later he became interested in acting therefore, he joined a small youth theatre workshop group and took theatre studies at A-Level then, he was enrolled in Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London and graduated from there in 2004.


Andrew stepped into the acting world via theatre since he was 9 years old where he appeared in a youth theatre production of Bugsy Malone. After graduating in 2004, he primarily focused on stage acting and gave many powerful performances in some stage shows such as in Kes (2004) and Romeo and Juliet(2005) at Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre where his performance was highly acclaimed. His other theatre performances include The Laramie Project (2005), Beautiful Thing (2006), Burn/Chatroom/ Citizenship (2006) and so on.


The British- American actor made his British Television debut in 2005 with Channel 4 teen drama Sugar Rush as Tom. Then he appeared in few episodes of some television shows like Doctor Who (2007), Freezing (2007), Trial & Retribution (2007), Red Riding (2009) and Saturday Night Live (2011, 2014).

Garfield made his first feature film debut from Lions of Lambs in 2007. In the same year, he featured in a TV film Boy A where he played the role of Jack Burridge/ Eric Wilson. The film premiered at the 2007 Toronto Film Festival and was critically acclaimed where the acting skills of Andrew were immensely praised. Then in the following years, he acted on The Other Boleyn Girl  (2008), The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009), Air (2009) and I’m here (2010).


His career took a turn when he got the role of Tommy D in a 2010 British romantic drama film Never Let Me Go and also his performance in an American biographical drama film The Social Network helped in uplifting his career. Both the movies were critically acclaimed and Andrew was widely applauded for his terrifically anguished acting abilities.

Andrew got his breakthrough role when he was cast as Peter Parker/Spiderman in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spiderman produced by Sony Productions, a reboot to the original Spiderman series, alongside Emma Stone in 2010. The role was a dream come true for Garfield and consequently, he worked hard to do justice for his character. The movie released in July 2012 and became one of the highest grossing movies of that year. The performance of Andrew of a fresh-faced Peter Parker with wry humor skills was well-received globally.  Subsequently, he reprised his role as Spiderman in The Amazing Spiderman 2 which was also a success in box office. Later in February 2015, Sony and Marvels made a deal that integrated Spiderman character into Marvel Cinematic Universe ergo the sequels to the Amazing Spiderman 2 were canceled and recently the role of Spiderman is taken over by Tom Holland.


Furthermore, he starred and co-produced an American drama film called 99 Homes (2014). He then featured in a biographical war drama film Hacksaw Ridge as Desmond Doss in 2016. The movie was highly acclaimed by critics as well as audiences and Garfield was extremely admired for his performance. He also acted in a historical drama film Silence (2016) and another biographical drama film Breathe (2017).

He made his Broadway theatre debut by the revival of Death of Salesman as Biff Loman in 2012.

Upcoming Projects

Andrew is an immensely talented actor so he is set to deliver his acting skills in both theatres and movies.  He is soon to be seen as Sam in an American crime-thriller movie Under the Silver Lake which is to be released in 2018. Furthermore, he will be performing as Prior Walter in a play named Angels in America at the Neil Simon Theatre in 2018.


Personal Life

Andrew owns a loft in Surrey, England. He belongs to Jewish immigrant family background with the original family surname ‘Garfinkel’. He possesses dual citizenship in the United Kingdom and the United States. He shares a cordial relationship with many Hollywood actors such as Robert Pattinson, Matt Smith, Jesse Eisenberg and so on. He was in a romantic relationship with actress Shannon Woodward from 2008-2011. After splitting up with Shannon, Garfield started dating his The Amazing Spiderman co-star Emma Stone since 2011. Their relation seemed to be pretty serious and they even bought a $2.5 million house in Beverley Hills. Unfortunately, the couple didn’t last and parted ways in October 2015 but they still maintain friendly relation with each other. Recently, in an interview during his play Angels in America, he stated that he is a heterosexual man who is open to establishing relation with any person irrespective of their gender, which raised lots of controversies regarding his sexuality. Moreover, he is the ambassador of Sport for the Worldwide Orphans Foundations (WWO).




Garfield is a gifted actor who has been honored with many awards in theatres and movies as well. He won the Best Newcomer Award from Manchester Evening News Theatre Award for his performance in Kes in 2004 and he also won Outstanding Newcomer Award from the Evening Standard Theatre Awards for his performance in play Romeo and Juliet in 2006. As far as movies are concerned, he was honored with Best Actor Award from British Academy Television Awards in 2007.  He also won Best Actor and Best Breakthrough Performance for his movie Never Let Me Go and The Social Network from Evening Standard British Film Awards and Hollywood Film Festival respectively in 2010. Additionally, he won Best ActorBest Actor in an Action Movie, British/Irish actor of the year 2016 by Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts AwardsCritics’ Choice Movie AwardsSaturn Awards and London Film Critics’ Circle respectively for his movie Hacksaw Ridge in the year 2016.
