Born on 23 April  1990 in Harrow, London; Dev Patel is the son of an IT consultant father Raj and a caregiver mother Anita Patel. At first, Patel attended Longfield Middle School and then completed his high school in 2007 from Whitmore High School by getting full marks from his General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) performance.


Patel officially stepped into the entertainment industry from the E4 teen drama television series Skins in 2007 alongside Nicholas Hoult. He portrayed the role of a British Pakistani Muslim teenager, Anwar Kharral for two seasons that was praised globally. Later, he appeared in an episode of Mister Eleven in 2009 and as Neal Sampat, one of the main and acclaimed casts of the TV series The NewsRoom form 2012 to 2014.



Dev’s popularity from Skins led him to land the breakthrough role of his career when Danny Boyle casted him in his movie Slumdog Millionaire. The movie was a huge success universally with a box office collection of more than $375 million. Patel depicted the character of Jamal Malik, a young Indian Muslim boy brought up in the slums of Mumbai. He played the role beautifully and gained immense fame worldwide after the release of the movie in 2008.


After the success of Slumdog Millionaire, Patel was signed by many known directors. In 2010 he acted in an American action fantasy film The Last Airbender. Although the film didn’t do quite well, the role of Patel was well- received. In the following years, he featured in various films such as The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011) which is a British comedy-drama film, a drama film About Cherry (2012) which premiered in 2012 Berlin International Film Festival, The Road Within (2014) along with a science fiction crime thriller Chappie (2015).



Recently, Dev has delivered incredible performances in the movies The Man Who Knew Infinity, a 2016 British biographical drama film about an Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan along with another 2016 Australian biographical drama film Lion as Saroo Brierley alongside Nicole Kidman, based on a non-fiction novel “A Long Way Home” written by Brierley himself. He was highly acclaimed for his bristling and committed performance in these movies.

Moreover, he has also given voice in an English dubbed Japanese animated film Only Yesterday (2016) and a video game The Last Airbender in 2010.

Patel is a total delight to watch. He is set to play the role of Arjun in an American- Australian thriller movie Hotel Mumbai which will be released in 2018. He will also be seen in the movie The Wedding Guest which is to be released in 2019. It is reported that he will enact the role of David Copperfield in Film Nation’s new untitled retelling of Charles Dickens’s “The Personal History of David Copperfield” which will be directed by Armando Lannucci.

Personal Life

Dev resides in London, UK but owns property in Los Angeles, USA as well. He primarily follows Hindu religion. He also has a keen interest in Taekwondo and earned his first dan black belt in March 2006. In 2009 he began dating his Slumdog Millionaire co-star Frieda Pinto. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out between them and ended their six years long relationship in 2014. Lately, it has been confirmed that he is in a romantic relationship with Tilda Cobham- Hervey whom he met while filming for his upcoming movie Hotel Mumbai.




Being an overwhelming actor, Dev Patel has been nominated and honored with many reputed awards mainly for his work in movies like Slumdog Millionaire and Lion.
