From being a child prodigy to an amazing stage performer and then to a versatile character actor -he is one of the marvelous entertainers present in Hollywood today-he is none other than the legend-wait for it- dary Neil Patrick Harris.

Neil Patrick Harris was born in 15 June 1973 at Albuquerque, New Mexico as the youngest child to lawyer parents Sheila Gail and Ronald Gene Harris. His parents also owned a restaurant. Neil was quite a brainiac as he graduated from La Cueva High School with high honors in 1991 though he was tutored privately for a year.

Career

Neil has had an interesting run all through television, movies, theatre, and so on. He was first spotted by playwright Mark Medoff at a drama camp which led him to his film debut in a 1988 drama film “Clara’s Heart” and then starred in “Purple People Eater” in the same year.

 

After that, Neil stepped on the television industry. His television debut was “Too Good to be True” in 1988. The following year, he was seen as the teen prodigy doctor in a popular TV series “Doggie Howser, M.D.” which ran for four seasons from 1989 to 1993. The series and his acting skills made his name shine in the industry. In the subsequent years, Neil appeared in many TV Series doing guest roles such as “Blossom” (1991), “Captain Planet and The Planeteers” (1992), “Murder, She Wrote” (1993), “My Antonia” (1995), “Stark Raving Mad” (1999-2000),  “Ed” (2001), “BoomTown” (2003).

Furthermore, Neil starred as his much-beloved character as Barney Stinson in the hit CBS sitcom “How I Met Your Mother” which aired for nine seasons from 2005 to 2014. This was considered as one of his breakthrough roles as he claimed all the appreciation and popularity that he deserved making him a globally recognized personality. Neil then appeared in “Sesame Street” (2008), “Glee” (2010), and “Under the Gun” (2014). Neil has also hosted “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, “Tony Awards”,  “Academy Awards” and did voice roles in “The Penguins of Madagascar” (2010-2015) and “Robert Chicken” where stars like Scarlett JohanssonNicholas HoultChris EvansMaisie Williams have worked. Recently, he has been working on a black comedy-drama “A Series of Unfortunate Events”.

 

As far as Neil’s movie career is concerned he has starred in many films in the guest as well as lead roles. He featured in an American drama thriller “Animal Room” (1995), a military sci-fin “Starship Troopers” (1997), a comedy drama “The Next Best Thing” (2000), an American stoner comedy “Kumar & Harold Go to White Castle” (2004) and its sequel “Kumar & Harold Escape from Guantanamo Bay” (2008), an independent film “The Best and The Brightest” (2010), a live-action/comedy animated film “The Smurfs” (2011) along with its sequel “The Smurfs 2” (2013), a psychological thriller “Gone Girl” (2014) and a sci-fi comedy-drama “Downsizing” (2017). He even gave voice roles in some animated films like “Cloudy with the Chance of Meatballs” and its sequel “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” as Steve in 2011 and 2013 respectively.

Neil has done well in theatres as well. He debuted in theatre in 1997 from a play titled “Rent”. Then in the following years, he appeared in several plays such as “Romeo and Juliet” (1998), “Sweeney Todd” (2001), “Cabaret” (2003), “All My Sons” (2006), “Company” (2011) , “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” (2014). In all his plays he has performed incredibly and is admired as a splendid stage performer.

Moreover, Patrick has sung a song named “Nothing Suits Me Like A Suit” and “Dream On” for How I Met Your Mother and Glee respectively. He also gave voice in video games like “Saints Row 2”, “Rock of the Dead” and many more.

Upcoming Project

 

Neil is to continue to play his role as Count Olaf in the TV series “A Series of Unfortunate Events” in the upcoming years. He is also set to produce as well as host a NBC television game show “Genius Junior”.

Personal Life

 

Neil lives in Harlem, New York with his family. Though he is considered to be the heartthrob of many women, he confirmed that he is sexually inclined towards men in 2006. Neil started dating co-actor David Butka since 2004 but he confirmed the news only in 2007. Later, in 2010 they were blessed with two beautiful children, a son Gideon Scott and daughter Harper Grace via surrogacy.  After the release of Marriage Equality Act in New York, the couple said ‘I do’ in an intimate ceremony in 2014 in Italy. He owns a dog named Watson. Moreover, Neil also supports various noble organizations such as AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Children International Organization, Global Green Organization and so on.

Neil had started to bag awards since he was 17 years old. The first award won by Neil was Best Young Actor Staring in a television Series and Favourite Male Performer in a New TV series from Young Artist Awards and Peoples’ Choice Awards respectively for his popular series Doogie Howser M.D. in 1990. Then, in he won thrice Favourite TV Comedy Actor from Peoples’ Choice Award for his series How I Met Your Mother in 2011, 2012 and 2013 respectively. Additionally, he was honored four times with Outstanding Special Class Program from Primetime Emmy Awards for 63rd, 65th, 66th and 67th Tony Awards in the year 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014 respectively.
